Meet our specialist forensics team Humphrey Creed, Head of National Forensics Group After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1975, Humphrey joined Horwath Clark Whitehill LLP in 1988 and became a partner later in that year. He is now a partner in the London office where he is Head of Forensic Accounting. He became a Member of the Academy of Experts in 1991. He acts as an expert witness in cases involving the work of accountants, both in regulatory and civil matters; loss of profit cases; business valuations including expert determination under the President's Appointment Scheme and criminal matters in particular confiscation orders and fraud. He runs a team whose work involves the preparation and examination of claimants' and defendants' claims for personal injury, fatal accidents and clinical negligence including calculation of the quantum of loss of profit, pension and benefits and appearing in court as expert witness. He is a member of the Thames Valley Police Liaison Panel. This assists the police fraud squads with their investigations, especially on computer matters. He has had a number of articles published in the legal press as well as writing the “Accountants Digest on Forensic Accounting” for Tolleys. He has also made an educational video for The Law Channel of The Television Education Network. Richard Bates, Manager Richard qualified as a Chartered Accountant at a mid tier firm in September 2000 and joined the Forensics Accounting team at Horwath Clark Whitehill in November 2000. Richard has worked on a wide range of cases and has experience in fraud investigations, criminal investigations, business and share valuations, loss of profits calculations, loss of earnings calculations and loss of pension benefits calculations.
Chris trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in London in 1962. He joined Horwath Clark Whitehill as a director of the Litigation Support Unit in December 1995. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (FCA) and a Member of The Academy of Experts (MAE). Over the past 23 years he has been regularly instructed to prepare reports and to act as expert witness in litigation matters involving losses arising from contract disputes, personal injury, negligence, fraud, matrimonial and Will disputes. This has also included calculation of any loss of pension rights and benefits. He has acted for both plaintiffs and defendants and carried out legal aided work. Chris has also acted as a business adviser partner for a wide variety of owner-managed businesses, companies and partnership having considerable experience in quantifying loss of profits in circumstances involving disputes and litigation and in share and company valuations.
Arthur has been practising VAT for 26 years, spending his first eight years as a Customs Officer in a VAT Office. During that time he was a member of the local investigation team responsible for detecting and processing both civil and criminal VAT frauds. In 1989 he joined Horwath Clark Whitehill where he is now Head of National VAT and a partner in the specialist VAT Group which consists of eight full time specialists. Having become a gamekeeper turned poacher he has been involved in a number of cases as an expert witness.
Chris has had a long and successful career in accountancy. He first became a partner with a major firm in 1976 and joined Horwath Clark Whitehill in 2004. Chris has a wealth of experience as an audit partner and a general practitioner and specialises in client advisory work particularly in the waste stream management, renewable energy and construction sectors, professional practice management and client succession issues. Chris is a member of The British Academy of Experts, a founding member of The Expert Witness Institute and is a Mindshop Facilitator. Patrick O'Neill , Partner Patrick qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1976 and has been a partner since 1982. Patrick is an expert in share and business valuation and provides forensic accounting services to the legal sector. Examples of work that he undertakes in this area include matrimonial, shareholder disputes involving conduct of directors and other disputes where financial expertise is required. He also provides fiscal valuations for IHT, CGT, EMI schemes, and for other tax purposes. He is a past Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Reading Branch and currently serves as a director of several organisations.
