Meet our specialist Risk and assurance group Trevor Williams , Head of Risk and Assurance Group Trevor joined Horwath Clark Whitehill in 1989 and is now a partner within the Risk & Assurance Group. He has a specific interest in developing new techniques and approaches to audit and risk management, often involving the use of automation. In the past he has developed approaches to IT security audit and fraud investigations and most recently developed an approach to basing audit work around risk registers in the light of the Risk Based Auditing guidelines. He has particular expertise in Financial organisations particularly insurance, Oil companies and the Media. Trevor was the Project Manager for the development of the IDEA software on behalf of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants from 1993- 2000. He has co-authored the IIA – Guide to Risk Management Frameworks (May 2007), IIA - Guide to Computer Assisted Audit Techniques (July 2006), IDEA manuals (1992 to 2000), Wrote the American Institutes guide to PC Security (1991) and co-wrote an Institute of Internal Auditors guide to auditing UNIX (1991). Trevor is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars. He has presented on courses and conferences run by the Institute of Internal Auditors (both UK and Ireland), Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, Chartered Institute of Public Finance Accountants (CIPFA), Certified Accountants, The British Computer Society, the Scottish Audit Group, London Audit Group, Building Society Internal Auditors annual conference and many others (over fifty in total).
Verna Hughes, Partner Email: verna.hughes@horwath.co.uk Verna joined Horwath Clark Whitehill in 1990 and is now a partner in the Risk & Assurance Group. Her main responsibilities include managing the implementation of Magique/Galileo software and providing risk management services. Verna was part of the team which developed Galileo, a comprehensive audit management and tracking system for Internal Audit departments and the Magique Risk Management software. Verna works with clients to customise the application and provides after sales support and training. Customers include the Rural Payments Agency, Shell Financial Services, Department for Works and Pensions and over 150 other major organisations. Verna also conducts Risk Response exercises with clients to establish their risk management methodology. She was involved in the specification and testing of IDEA from 1990-2001 and she co-authored manuals, guides and an on-line help system for the software. She continues to provide IDEA related services, particularly for specialist reviews and fraud investigations. Verna has trained over 3000 internal auditors globally in the use of data interrogation and other audit automation tools. A regular speaker at conferences and seminars, Verna has spoken at the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), ACE Audit Technology, CIPFA Computer Audit Conference and the London Audit Group. Verna is an affiliate member of the ICAEW and the IIA. Clive Malcolm, Partner He joined the firm in 1981 with responsibility for computer audit. He became an audit partner in 1985, and has been involved with many clients in the financial and regulated sectors. He takes an interest in audit technical matters and is responsible for the automation of the firm's audit approach. He started the firm's internal audit department that has now been merged into the Risk & Assurance Group. He is particularly closely involved with the provision of outsourced internal audit services and with consultancy on the integration of risk management and internal audit. He also has extensive experience of investigations and assistance to clients in complying with the requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. His clients come from a range of sectors, including banking, charities and social housing, as well public sector bodies and commercial companies. Clive is a member of the firm's international Risk Steering Group and sits on the Social Housing Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
